Oscars 12 Best and Worst Dressed

February 27, 2012 § 3 Comments

Oscar’s fashion is discussed just as much as Oscars winners and to tell you the truth I am always more excited to see the red carpet than the main event itself. So I just could not avoid commenting on celebrity looks from last night – there are a few that will forever be in My Fashion Wish List’s inspiration scrap book (mental one, no actual cutting out and gluing is involved).

In my eyes the fashion winners were the ‘pale and interesting’ looks. The award of the best dressed (oh yeah, and Best Supporting Actress) goes to Octavia Spenser in Tadashi Shoji gown – perfect fit of the dress that shows of the curves and proves real women can shine as much as the modelly types. Brides Maids’ Kristen Wiig was beautiful in understated J Mendel gown – fabric layers could have make her look like a wedding cake but those ones hit the spot making Kristen look more like a floating goddess. Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford had a bit of a super hero moment with white cape – yet it was so right and regal I absolutely loved it! And last but not the least is fashion’s most loved clothes horse Rooney Mara (and this is in no way a bad thing – no one can wear the outfits better: strong hair, porcelain skin and fragile body is the perfect canvas for any fashion designer) in Givenchy.

And the not-so-pale-but-definitely-interesting looks that finish off my best dressed picks are as follows. Emma Stone in Giambattista Valli once again proved that she is a fashion force to be reckoned with and was not afraid of big neck bow and blending in with the carpet – and it paid off.  Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen looked royal – beautiful detail on the dress, perfect hair (oh how I love the hair colour) and overall fragility made her stand out. And then there is Michelle Williams in coral dress by Louis Vuitton who paid attention to detail and got her accessories spot on with contrasting Bottega Veneta clutch and intricate silver bow on the waistline, but the best part of the outfit is of course peplum – the fashion world is crazy about them at the moment!

And it is worth mentioning the worst dressed. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa got it completely wrong: the dress just did not work and looked too heavy and movement constraining plus her face – there was something definitely wrong there too (overdone botox?). I have very little to say about Cameron Diaz in Gucci. Yes, she was only presenting and did not want a statement dress yet ‘boring’ should not be the look anyone goes for on the red carpet. And as far as Jennifer Lopez is concerned she said so herself in the interview: she can never escape her Bronx roots. Big red carpet favourite Zuhair Murad gown could not save her either.

Special mention as The Biggest disappointed last night and actually this whole awards season goes to Angelina Jolie. In the last few years we got used to seeing her float down the carpet and steal the show but this year her fashion choices were so awkward they took away the grace and  magnetism the actress is famous for. Oscar’s Atelier Versace choice was overpowering for statuesque figure and even the high split did nothing to add sex appeal to a very mature dress. It is also worth mentioning the Golden Globes outfit, another Atelier Versace gown which had an overall bridal feeling completely spoiled by red accents. Sleeked back hair was not helping either.

And if I had to pick a dress for myself to wear on Oscar’s red carpet, I would go for Louise Roe gown by Black Halo: structured shape elongating the figure is softened with fish tail and pale pink colour. Perfect contrasting accessories and hair sweeped up to keep the  focus on plunging yet hidden neckline. Love it!

Lock Me, Louis Vuitton

You can’t buy love. Yet some symbols of love can indeed be purchased. And throughout history jewellery was top pick on the list as a present that symbolises deep feelings (or in modern day symbolises something more along the lines of ‘I’m sorry I had an affair’). Ever since the release of Cartier Love collection, it has been the go to range for those kind of presents but now Louis Vuitton Lock Me collection has entered the game at a lower price range. Romantic symbolism of locks, keys and hearts plus the design of the buckle that is LV through and through – what more could you possibly want!

Available in up to 4 colours (Amarante, Ecaille, Black and Pomme d’Amor) the prices are as follows: pendant £340, bracelet £340, ring £180 and earrings £270.

Gangsta Paradise

When was the last time you wore high tops and felt super fashionable? The answer is most likely to be never, until now that is. Fashion world is currently in love with high tops, but my obsession is more specific – I love high tops with hidden wedge. The look is perfect for current sport de lux trend, plus who does not like a bit of a height boost (ok, I know a lot of girls out there don’t need the extra centimeters, but with my 5’5”/166 cm it is very desirable). So whether you call them sneakers, trainers or just high tops this new shoe type is in high demand!

  1. Ash Cool Suede Strapped Wedge Trainers, £139
  2. Asos Ark Leather Wedge Ankle Boots in Brown, £85
  3. Asos Ark Leather Wedge Ankle Boots in Off White, £85
  4. See by Chloe Lace Up Wedge Sneakers in Beige, £262
  5. See by Chloe Wedge Sneakers, £260
  6. See by Chloe Lace Up Wedge Sneakers in Petalo, £262
  7. Aldo Nedz Concealed Wedge Suede Trainers, £80
  8. Ash Thelma Leather Buckle Wedge Trainers, £145
  9. Ash Bea Colourblock Wedge Trainers, £169

And if the brown to nude versions are so last season for your color taste, Marc by Marc Jacobs High Tops are the answer!

My Fashion Wish List Is Ready For Spring

February 23, 2012 § Leave a comment

I had a great day today. Here in London the weather was just perfect – sunny and warm it definitely felt like spring has arrived. And who is not looking forward to spring? With a wardrobe full of new season hot items and a wish list that would fill another one of those (wardrobes, that is) I have been waiting on the start line for weeks now and it is all about to kick off. Oh and there was another thing that made my day – my post on Lana Del Rey being picked for top 20 posts of the week on IFB. Exciting stuff! Here are the links to all the high quality blog posts that made the cut for your weekend reading, enjoy!

Del Rey – Lana’s First Fashion Tribute

February 21, 2012 § Leave a comment

In retrospect I knew it was coming. After the success of naming a handbag after Alexa Chung, which was one of the major factors propelling Mulberry to fashion heights with the unprecedented speed for British label, having a new fashion muse and as trendy as Lana Del Rey was an obvious step. Indeed Mulberry was a first fashion establishment that recognised Lana’s appeal by hiring her to sing at their LA party. And now that even British Vogue gave her a seal of approval, calling a bag Del Rey was a perfect PR move: fashion world already had eyes on Mulberry for their Autumn/Winter 2012 catwalk show (star studded row would make any designer proud with Michelle Williams, Elizabeth Olsen, Olivia Palermo, Pixie Geldof and Downton Abbey actresses Laura Carmichael and Michelle Dockery to name a few) and having Lana float in with a brand new Del Rey bag just sent fashionistas and media into frenzy!

Mulberry’s Emma Hill said Lana inspired them with her vintage style and seductive voice. Indeed Del Rey bag does have a very vintage feel – add White Ostrich material (the one Lana was wearing for the show and Mulberry party in the evening) and you have a seductive feel indeed. I love Lana’s style (I wrote a post about her recently which you can read here), I love Mulberry, and guess what – I love new Mulberry Del Rey handbag.

Marni for H&M

February 20, 2012 § 2 Comments

The time has arrived for the brand new H&M collaboration with Marni to be revealed. Original patterns, amazing silk pieces, to die for jewellery – I can not wait till 8th March to update my closet with a handful of items. By far my favourite are the silk creation – bright shorts, pajama styled shirts and trousers (trend alert!) and even silk cardigans: those items will be unique on high street. But also, unlike the Versace for H&M predecessor, Marni jewelery creations are worth paying attention to: statement necklaces, colourful earrings and oversized bracelets that scream high fashion. The only items I am not impressed with are sandals, which look too masculine and bulky and anything in brown and green tribal print – the kind of print that despite uniqueness just does not look stylish enough. All in all though, I am excited as there is a whole range of items I absolutely love! This will go down in history as one of the best collaborations for H&M.

Indeed the success of the team up could be predicted by looking at the great turn out at the launch party which saw stars like Drew Barrymore, Freida Pinto, Winona Ryder and Mila Jovovich showcase the designs. Below are (a few) of my favourite items. I promise to return to the topic on 8th and tell you all about the shopping experience and what items I ended up purchasing!

Canvas Beauties

February 18, 2012 § Leave a comment

In my previous post I blogged about rubber becoming the IT material for this season’s bags. Yet after coming across these canvas creations I am ready to give up both leather and rubber! Thursday Friday is a cool new brand creating canvas bags and pouches with prints of It bags: Chanel, Miu Miu and Balenciaga. The best thing – your gym, picnic or second overspill bag will never have to be boring and style-less again. I just love that these bags are both a fashion and anti-fashion items: tribute and opposition to the It bags they display. And unlike the originals they won’t cost a fortune. Large canvas bag called Super Together is $90 (approximately £57), original Together is $65 (approximately £41) and pouches called Here Pochettes are $35 each (£22).

I am planning to purchase Together and use it as a bag in it’s own right – the size is perfect as it will fit all the daily essentials plus a few magazines, laptop, change of shoes and of course a Here pouch filled with must-have beauty items. For example I absolutely can not leave the house without hand cream, lip balm, eyeliner and red lipstick. Have a look at the entire range and purchase them online at www.thufri.com.

Rubbers

February 16, 2012 § 1 Comment

Is it just me or have you all noticed that leather is no longer the It material for bags? Last season we had many designers turn to canvas for their ultra-luxury totes (think Lanvin with prices of £450 and up), and this season we are witnessing rubber revolution (well, not just rubber but plastics and perspex too).

The idea is very utilitarian – rubber bags are durable, easy to clean and as in case of clutches provide perfect grip(don’t take the latter point too seriously). But of course there is more to it – rubber begs to be highly colourful, and with colour being a major trend of the season, who can say no to bright and candy-like bags on the pictures above? They are:

  1. Michael by Michael Kors Jet Set Jelly Tote, £130
  2. Anya Hindmarch Nevis Colour-Block Rubber Tote, £295
  3. Anya Hindmarch Valorie Matte Clutch, £250

And if you are on the budget, as always Asos has the answer: frosted perspex clutches on the picture below are £18 each and are large enough to fit all your necessities for the day plus will provide the needed burst of colour to your outfit.
